Drop in an animated GIF and get an MP4 back — usually five to ten times smaller with no visible difference. WEBM, MOV and MKV are in the list too. No account, no watermark.
A GIF stores every frame in full. An MP4 stores the first frame and then only what changed — and in most animations the background does not change at all. That is where the five to ten times comes from, and it is also why a GIF of a mostly-still scene shrinks the most.
On top of that a GIF is limited to 256 colours per frame, so an MP4 usually looks better as well as being smaller. Gradients stop banding.
Reddit, Twitter/X, Discord and most forums convert your GIF to a video behind the scenes anyway. Uploading the MP4 yourself skips their conversion and their quality settings. E-mail is the other one: a five-megabyte GIF often bounces where a six-hundred-kilobyte MP4 goes straight through.
Where a GIF still wins: anywhere the thing has to play by itself with no player controls and no click — some e-mail clients, some old forums, and chat apps that treat GIFs as stickers.
WEBM is smaller again than MP4 and plays in every current browser, but not in older desktop players. MOV is what Apple software and most editing programs prefer. MKV is a container that keeps everything you throw at it and is the safest choice if the file is going into an archive rather than onto a website.
