The short version
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the format iPhones and iPads have used by default since iOS 11. It stores a photo using HEVC compression inside a HEIF container, which packs the same image into roughly half the size of a JPG at similar quality. That is great for your storage, less great for compatibility.
So what creates a HEIC file? An iPhone or iPad camera, by default, since iOS 11: every HEIC picture from a camera roll, whether a portrait, a Live Photo or a burst frame, follows the same format (screenshots are PNG).
HEIC in one screen
- Extension: .heic (sometimes .HEIC in capitals, or .heif for the wider container).
- Full form: High Efficiency Image Container, stored in a High Efficiency Image File Format (HEIF) box.
- MIME type: image/heic, or image/heic-sequence when the file holds more than one frame. The HEIF equivalents are image/heif and image/heif-sequence.
- Compression: HEVC, also known as H.265: the same codec used for 4K video.
- Standard: ISO/IEC 23008-12, published in 2015; Apple made it the iPhone default in iOS 11 (2017).
- Colour depth: up to 10 bits per channel, where JPG stops at 8: which is why skies and skin tones band less.
- Transparency: yes, HEIC can carry an alpha channel. JPG cannot, so that is one thing you do lose on the way out.
- How to recognise one: the bytes ftypheic sit near the start of the file, which is how software identifies it even when the extension has been renamed.
That's all a HEIC extension is: those four letters, and a HEIC image inside. The HEIC file type is an image, and the HEIC file format is HEIF with HEVC compression. HEIC pictures from an iPhone convert one at a time or as a whole batch with the box above.
Why won't it open everywhere?
If you're trying to open HEIC file photos outside Apple's world, here's why it often fails: the format is newer and patent-encumbered, so support stays patchy:
- Many Windows apps need an extra codec before they will show a HEIC.
- Plenty of websites, forums, and upload forms only accept JPG or PNG.
- Older photo editors, printers, and messaging tools simply reject it.
JPG, by contrast, is understood by essentially everything, which is why converting is often the quickest fix.
Is a HEIC file safe to open? Yes: it's just a photo in a different container, and nothing about the format is a security risk on its own. As a file type HEIC sits in the image category, alongside JPG and PNG.
HEIC vs JPG at a glance

So the difference is size versus compatibility, not one being simply better. At the same file size, HEIC is the better quality format; at the same quality, it's the smaller one. The HEIC image format also stores up to 10 bits of colour per channel, two more than JPG, which is why gradients band less in the original. To view HEIC files without converting, Apple's own Photos app and Preview open them natively; elsewhere, converting is the reliable route.
What does HEIC mean?
The name looks cryptic but breaks down neatly. HEIF, High Efficiency Image File Format, is the container, the box the picture sits in. HEIC is that box when the picture inside is compressed with HEVC, the same high-efficiency codec (also called H.265) that streaming services use for video. So a .heic file is really "a HEIF container holding an HEVC-encoded photo". That shared lineage with modern video compression is exactly why it fits so much detail into so little space, and also why a device without the codec cannot read it.
The same container can even hold more than one image, which is how a single HEIC stores a burst, a Live Photo's frames, or an edited and original version side by side: something a flat JPG was never designed to do.
That's also where the name comes from: High Efficiency Image Container, a picture format built around efficiency. Image by image, the HEIC meaning is simply that your iPhone saved the photo this way instead of as JPG.
Where HEIC trips people up
Most people never notice the format until a photo won't cooperate somewhere. The usual moments are:
- Sending to a Windows PC. AirDrop off, emailing to a colleague, or dropping files onto a work laptop, and the picture arrives as an unopenable .heic.
- Uploading to a website. Job portals, government forms, marketplaces and older content systems often accept only JPG or PNG and reject the file before you can submit.
- Sharing with Android or older phones. A friend on an older device may see a broken thumbnail instead of your photo.
- Printing or editing. Some print kiosks and legacy photo editors simply don't list HEIC as a supported type.
In every one of those cases a JPG copy just works, and so which is why converting the handful of photos you actually need to share is usually faster than fighting the format.
Device by device
- iPhone and iPad: the camera's own format, so the Photos and Files apps open it without any extra step.
- Mac: Photos and Preview open HEIC natively.
- Android: newer phones, including recent Samsung models, usually open HEIC; older ones may not and need a JPG.
- Windows 10 and 11: need the HEIF Image Extensions plus the paid HEVC Video Extensions from the Microsoft Store, or a converted JPG. See the Windows guide.

What you keep and what you lose
Converting to JPG keeps the thing you care about: the visible photograph, at whatever quality you pick. What a plain JPG cannot carry are the Apple-specific extras a HEIC may store: the depth map behind Portrait mode and the little Live Photo motion clip. For a still image you want to upload, email or print, none of that matters; you are simply making a universally readable copy while your original HEIC stays untouched on your device.

Why won't it open on Windows or Android?
Support outside Apple's ecosystem is patchy: many apps need an extra codec, and lots of upload forms accept only JPG or PNG. A JPG copy sidesteps all of it.
Do I lose quality converting to JPG?
Both formats are lossy and at high quality the difference is very hard to see. The full converter's quality slider lets you pick the balance yourself.
Is .heic the same as .heif?
Nearly. HEIF is the container and .heif is its generic extension; .heic is that same container with the picture inside compressed by HEVC, which is what Apple writes. Every .heic is a HEIF file, but a .heif could hold an image compressed some other way.
What is the MIME type of a HEIC file?
image/heic for a single picture and image/heic-sequence for a burst or Live Photo. If an upload form rejects your file, this is often the string it is checking against its allowed list.
Does HEIC support transparency?
Yes: it can carry an alpha channel. JPG cannot, so a transparent area becomes solid white when you convert. Choose PNG instead if the transparency matters.
What gets dropped?
Only the Apple extras: depth-map data and the Live Photo motion clip. The visible still photo converts exactly as you'd expect, and your original HEIC is left untouched.

Is HEIC compression some kind of AI?
No. HEVC is a conventional compression method, the same kind used for 4K video: it predicts and stores the picture efficiently, it doesn't generate or alter anything.
Why does WhatsApp or email convert HEIC to JPG automatically?
Apps that run on non-Apple platforms use the OS's compatibility settings and often convert on the way out so the recipient can open the photo. Apple itself converts automatically when you share to non-HEIC apps, if your iPhone's sharing option is set to Most Compatible.
How large is a HEIC file compared to JPG?
Roughly half the size at equivalent quality. A photo that would be 4 MB as a JPG is often around 2 MB as a HEIC, which is why Apple chose the format for on-device storage.

What is a PSD file?
Photoshop's native format: layers, masks, text and effects all stay editable, unlike a flattened JPG or PNG. So what is the PSD file actually for? Non-destructive editing: keeping every layer separate until you flatten and export. It's not a photo format in the HEIC sense, and this page only converts HEIC, so a PSD still needs Photoshop or a PSD-specific tool to open.
What is a VTT file?
A WebVTT file holds subtitle or caption text with timestamps, played alongside a video rather than a photo. It's lines of text, nothing to do with HEIC. What is VTT file support like? VTT is what YouTube and most web video players expect when you upload separate caption files.
What is CBR file format, and what is CBZ file format?
Both are comic-book archives: a folder of page images packed with RAR (CBR, Comic Book RAR) or ZIP (CBZ), usually JPGs that a comic reader shows one after another like a slideshow. What is a CBR file inside? A numbered sequence of page images. Not sure what CBR file reader to use? Any comic reader app will do; a plain image viewer won't unpack them. What is MIDI file format?
A MIDI file is a set of musical instructions (which notes, how loud, how long), not a recording of sound at all. It plays through whatever instrument sounds a device has installed, which is why the same MIDI file can sound completely different on two computers. No relation to HEIC photos.
What is AVI file format, and what is an AVI file used for?
AVI is short for Audio Video Interleave, an older Windows video container that can hold almost any codec inside it, which is why one AVI plays everywhere and another plays nowhere. Our own video converter accepts AVI as an input, even though this page is about photos rather than video.
What is an Opus file?
Opus is a compressed audio format built for speech and streaming, small in size at a quality that beats older formats like MP3 at the same bitrate. It's an audio codec, not a photo format, so it has nothing to do with HEIC. So what is a Opus file doing on your phone? Usually it's a voice message: WhatsApp and Telegram save those as Opus.
What is compressing a file, actually?
Squeezing the same information into fewer bytes, either by throwing away detail a person won't notice (lossy, like JPG or MP3) or by packing the data more efficiently without losing anything (lossless, like PNG or ZIP). Converting HEIC to JPG on this page is a lossy step in exactly that sense.
What is an MP3 file?
An MP3 is a lossy-compressed audio format, the sound equivalent of a JPG: it throws away detail a listener is unlikely to notice to keep the file small. Beyond music, podcasts, audiobooks and voice memos all use it too, since almost every device and app can play one. Unrelated to HEIC directly, but the same lossy idea: compress once, keep most of the quality, lose a little detail for a much smaller file. Is there a heic file viewer that doesn't need the Windows codec?
On a Mac, Preview and Photos open HEIC natively, no extra install: Apple's own format works out of the box on Apple's own software. Android's Google Photos app does too. Windows is the odd one out: without the paid HEVC Video Extensions from the Microsoft Store, even a basic HEIC file viewer only shows a thumbnail, not the full photo. Before I rename it to .jpg, what is a HEIC file extension telling me?
The .heic extension marks a photo stored in the HEIC container, compressed with HEVC. Renaming it to .jpg changes only the name, not the contents, so many apps still cannot open it. Converting it to a real JPG is what makes it open everywhere.
What is HEIC image data besides the picture itself?
