FLAC is great on a hard drive and useless in half the world's car stereos. Get an MP3 that plays everywhere — up to 400 MB and 20 minutes per file, no account, free.
FLAC is lossless: it compresses the audio without dropping anything, which makes it the right format to keep. It's also the format most likely to be refused — by car stereos, older phones, cheap MP3 players and half the apps that say "audio supported".
The sensible setup is both: FLAC on the drive, MP3 in the places that need it. The MP3 here is encoded at a high-quality variable bitrate (around 190 kbps) — in normal listening, most people can't pick it from the original.
One honest warning: converting FLAC to MP3 drops data by design. Don't delete the FLAC afterwards thinking the MP3 is equivalent — it plays the same, it isn't the same.
