Only the gaps are removed; the sound around them isn't touched. At the very start of the file even a short quiet lead-in is trimmed, so the audio begins on the first sound. It works on any recording, and the free cut is always the same: every silent audio stretch longer than a second goes.
There are no settings to learn: the threshold is always -40 dB for one second. The catch is background noise. If a fan, traffic or hum keeps the gaps above -40 dB, they don't count as silence and nothing is cut.
