Long pauses at the start, gaps in the middle, dead air at the end. This finds the silent stretches and takes them out, so an hour of recording becomes the part where something actually happens. Audio or video in, MP3 out.
Anything below -40 dB lasting longer than a second is removed — that's quiet enough to be a genuine gap rather than a pause for breath, and long enough that speech isn't chopped up. Room tone and gentle background noise sit above that line, so they stay and the result doesn't sound stitched together.
Interviews with long thinking pauses, lecture recordings that started ten minutes early, voice memos with a walk to the microphone at the front, and screen recordings where nobody spoke for a while. On a podcast it's the quickest first edit you can make before you touch anything by hand.
