MKV to MP4 plays everywhere, not just in a media player

Drop in an MKV from a download, a recording or a rip and get an MP4 back, the format phones and editors actually open.

WEBM and MOV are in the list too. Converting from AVI instead? There is a dedicated AVI to MP4 page. No account, no watermark.

Every converter here is free, full size, no account. Photos convert in your browser and never leave it, except camera RAW files and SVG tracing. Those, like video, audio and e-books, need our server, and we delete them right after.

How to convert MKV to MP4: drop the MKV in, leave the menu on MP4, and the download starts when it's ready. The conversion runs on our server, so it works the same from a phone as from a computer, and there's no app to install.

Does MKV to MP4 keep every audio track and the subtitles?

No, and this is the one thing worth knowing before converting. MKV is built to hold several audio tracks, several subtitle tracks and almost any codec at once, that flexibility is the whole point of the format. This conversion keeps the video and one audio track (whichever ffmpeg's own default selection picks, not something this tool chooses deliberately), and it does not carry subtitle tracks into the MP4. If the MKV you're converting has commentary tracks, multiple languages or subtitles you actually need, check the result before relying on it, because MP4 as written here only holds what a typical single video, single audio file holds.

Why convert MKV to MP4 at all?

Compatibility. MKV's everything-container design is exactly why some phones, some older software and a lot of upload forms don't open it, while MP4's narrower scope is why it opens almost everywhere. Converting trades MKV's flexibility for MP4's reach.

Does converting lose quality?

A small amount, because the video is re-encoded with a standard high-quality setting rather than copied byte for byte, the same trade every format conversion on this page makes. For a normal clip the difference is not visible.

Is there a size limit, and is my file kept?

1200 MB and 20 minutes per upload on the free tier. Video larger than 1080p comes back at 1080p. The file is processed on our own machine and deleted the moment the result is ready, whether the conversion succeeds or fails.

The other formats in the list

WEBM is smaller again and plays in every current browser. MOV is what Apple software and most editors prefer. MP4 stays the default here because it plays back on the widest range of devices.

Need a different format pair instead? Convert video format handles MP4, MOV, WEBM and more in one place. Only need to cut the clip down first? Trim a video keeps just the part that matters.

Common questions

Does MKV to MP4 keep all the audio and subtitle tracks?

No. An MKV can hold several audio tracks and subtitle tracks at once; this conversion keeps the video and one audio track (the converter's own default pick, not necessarily the first one) and does not carry subtitle tracks over. If you need a specific audio track or the subtitles, say so before converting, because the result only has what MP4 itself can hold the way this tool writes it.

Why convert MKV to MP4 at all?

Compatibility. MKV deliberately holds almost anything, multiple audio tracks, subtitles, various codecs, which is exactly why some phones, older software and upload forms don't open it. MP4 is narrower and far more widely supported.
