JPG compression leaves faint blocky noise around edges. On a clean logo saved as JPG the tracer handles it fine — speckle filtering strips the noise out. On a busy photo the noise becomes part of the trace and the result looks like a poster. If you have the same artwork as PNG, start from the PNG; if the JPG is all you have, it almost always still works for logos and lettering.
