HEIC (also written HEIF) is the photo format an iPhone has saved to by default since 2017, replacing the older JPG.
It uses a newer compression method called HEVC, the same technology behind many 4K videos, which is why a HEIC photo can look identical to a JPG while taking up roughly half the storage space. The format can also hold richer data than JPG: a wider range of colour, a depth map from Portrait mode, and even a short burst of frames stitched into what Apple calls a Live Photo. Converting to JPG throws away that extra data and re-encodes the picture using JPG's older, more limited compression, so the file usually ends up somewhat larger than the original HEIC even though the image itself barely changes to the eye. Neither format keeps a transparent background — that is a job for PNG. What conversion buys you is compatibility: JPG opens in every browser, photo app, and version of Windows without a special codec (extra decoding software), while HEIC still trips up older software, some printing services, and any Android phone that has not been updated recently.

A Live Photo HEIC file comes out as a still JPG: the few seconds of motion aren't part of a JPG.
