HEIC is what an iPhone saves by default, and it is genuinely a better format: roughly half the size of a JPG at the same quality. The trouble is everything else. Windows needs a paid codec from the Store on many machines, plenty of websites reject the upload, older Android phones cannot open it, and email recipients get a file they cannot preview. Converting to JPG trades a bit of file size for a picture that opens absolutely everywhere.
If you would rather not deal with it again, an iPhone can stop making HEIC files: Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible. New photos are then JPGs from the start. It costs you a little storage, and it does not change the photos you already have — those still need converting, which is what this page is for.

Nothing leaves your device. The conversion runs inside this page using your browser's own image engine, so your photos are never uploaded to us or to anyone else — there is no server here to upload them to. That also means it keeps working on a bad connection, and it costs nothing per file.
It also converts the other way round and between the ordinary formats: PNG to JPG, JPG to PNG and PNG to WebP all work the same way, in the same page.

Converting is not lossless — HEIC and JPG both throw away detail, so you are re-encoding once. The JPGs come out at quality 0.92, which is high enough that you would struggle to see the difference on a photo, and the file usually lands somewhere between the same size and twice the size of the HEIC.

HEIF is the container format; HEIC is the name Apple uses for HEIF files holding HEVC-encoded images. In practice they mean the same thing here and both work.
